FAQ

1. Can you reroof over existing shingles?

Yes, this is known as second-layer shingles. It allows you to put new roof shingles on top of old ones. This can help you save money since you don’t have to take the old shingles off before laying on new ones. However, this is only a possibility if you have asphalt shingles. Second layer shingles can also act as extra protection during extreme weather conditions. Please make sure to do additional research and make the best decision for your roof.

2. Can a roof be repaired instead of replaced?

Repairing your roof instead of replacing it can help you save money and the environment. Depending on the state of your roof, it’s possible to have it repaired instead of replaced. If your roof’s overall assessment–even with damages–is in good condition, it’s likely we can repair your roof. We recommend that older roofs past 20 years of age and in bad shape be replaced for obvious safety reasons.

3. When should you redo your roof?

We’ll provide a replacement schedule for you based on the type of material your roof uses; our recommended replacement periods are:
Composition Shingles: 12-20 years,
Asphalt Shingles: 15-30 years,
Wood Shingles: 20-25 years,
Rubber Roofs: 30-50 years and
Metal roofs: 20-25 years.
Homeowners should contact a roofing contractor for yearly routine roof inspections to better prepare for any necessary replacements.

4. What happens if you don’t replace your roof?

There can be short-term and long-term consequences that come with delaying replacements or repairs for your roof. Potential short-term effects include water leaks and further damage to your roof. In the long-term, you can see potential structural damage, health concerns and even devaluation of your property.

5. How often do you have to redo a roof?

The lifespan of your roof is determined by the material used. For instance, asphalt shingle roofs can typically last 20-25 years. It’s recommended to look into whether your current roof was installed over a previous layer of shingles, as that would usually shorten the lifespan.

6. Is re-roofing a good idea?

If your roof is in good condition toward the end of its lifespan, you might want to consider re-roofing. However, if leaks or other problems are present, re-roofing is not a good idea.

7. Is it better to tear off old shingles?

Yes, tearing off old shingles is typically a good idea before installing new ones. This is especially important if your old shingles are not in good shape. If your old shingles are in good condition, you can explore further avenues of laying your new shingles flat over your old ones.

8. Only one section of my roof is damaged — do I need to re-roof everything?

Although it may seem easier and cheaper to only take care of one damaged part, it is not professionally recommended that you only replace one portion of your roof. It also might not be as expensive as you think. If you find that you only have one layer of shingles, you can look into re-roofing.

9. Does climate change affect re-roofing practices?

Climate change can impact re-roofing practices directly and indirectly. Weather changes caused by climate change can directly impair construction sectors. Site programming, expense, labourer’s safety and delivery time can also be indirectly affected.

10. Can Roofing be done in the Winter Months in Atlantic?

Roofing can be necessary at any time of the year. With experienced contractors, roofing can be completed safely during the winter months.

11. Why Cleaning your gutters is important

a) Prevent water damage.

Rainwater will not drain correctly if your gutters are obstructed with leaves and debris. This causes water to overflow from your gutters, which can damage the interior and exterior of your house.

b) Protect your roof.

Rainwater stuck in clogged gutters will overflow and can cause potential rotting and leakage to your roof.

c) Keep pests from causing trouble.

Blocked gutters can attract birds, insects, and rodents. You want to make sure you don’t have a pest infestation on your hands.

d) Reduce the risk of a cracked foundation.

Blocked water can settle around your home’s foundation and cause cracks. This water can expand and freeze during winter, putting you in danger of a cracked foundation.

e) Save you money.

Get ahead of any future bills or headaches when you maintain proper gutter and downspout cleaning. This helps prolong the lifespan of your roof, so you don’t have to worry about repairs or replacements as frequently.
